So yesterday, I spoke about the importance of church branding. Today I have a few thoughts on what we should do when looking at a brand, evaluating your current church brand.
Over the last few years, I have been an online marketer and I have used self-branding to give myself credibility within an industry. Whether you think you have a church brand or not you do. Whether you are utilizing that brand for the good of your church to gain influence is another matter.
You see your church is a brand; your church brand attracts or repels. In my opinion, every church does both. It would be great if a church appealed to every person on the planet but in reality it does not.
In order to have a church brand that works for you I would use these points below.
- Pray over where God is calling you. What demographic and what brand would fit with them.
- Look at the kinds of interests your target audience may have. Your brand is not just about your logo, although it does happen to make a difference.
- Don’t try and be something your not. Regardless of what demographic your church is looking to attract. As I said before your church appeals to a certain demographic, whether that young, old, business or surfers. Your brand has to look like that. In essence, don’t try and have a website or brand that looks completely different to your Sunday experience. You may get people there but you won’t keep them there.
- If you don’t know what to do, outsource it. If you don’t know a Hebrew word you don’t just make it up and have a go, you look for a resource that does know. We as a church need not to be wary of bringing in people to do what is needed but embrace it.
The brand doesn’t just encompass the website, logo and stationary but the whole picture.

Lesson 1- Do you have a brand for your church that people recognize?
This is important and is sometimes overlooked as something that isn’t essential. Bit it is essential. Possible visitors to your church will start to recognize your church if you have a good brand.
Before you can start to market your church and you need to settle on a brand. If you don’t have a brand, then I would say get someone with the skill and expertise to get it done professionally. If you don’t have someone within your church that can do that then I suggest that you go and outsource this.
If you are not sure about branding then I would recommend you dropping us a line.

How should the church market today?

Christian churches seem to struggle when it comes to marketing. If you look in the secular word today, everything is heavily marketed. Just look at mobile phones, broadband, clothes, aftershave and most sports. All of these products are marketed magnificently through the tv, online media and direct mail. All these products have a lifeline!
Why do we struggle to market the Christian message? We have the best message, something that will never go out of date, and everyone can have it? Why do we make a pigs ear out of doing it sometimes then?
Thats a question I cannot answer but what I can say is we can learn from the trends in the business and retail world. There is one trend that has been happening on the internet and it is currently at its height of popularity. Video on the internet. Why did google buy youtube? Its because these video content websites are now taking over the popularity stakes on alexa.(tracks website visitors) These websites are known as web 2.0 and users control the content.
This would be my number 1 tip on where churches should start to market. There is a way of doing it to get the best result but video marketing for church in my humble opinion is a must and every succesfsul online marketer I know is implementing these techniques and getting lots of free traffic!
